Leafs have ‘Blast’ at home

With the Academy Awards being held later that night, the Oscar for best performance in a final game went to Julia Guertin.
And unlike what “Moonlight” did to “La La Land,” there would be no knocking Guertin off the stage.
The forward netted five goals to salvage a difficult weekend for the Fort Frances Atom Competitive Leafs, who ended the first-annual “Borderland Blast 2017” event with a 10-1 shellacking of the Lake of the Woods Canucks.
Piper Miller added a pair of goals while Hayden Allam, Kiera Fairnington, and Eva Gerstner each notched singles as the Leafs finished in fourth place at the five-team showcase with a 1-3 record.
Fort Frances was exuberant with its offensive explosion after scoring just once in each of its first three outings.
The Leafs opened play with a 7-1 loss to the Fargo (N.D.) Freeze, with Allam netting their lone goal.
Guertin was the lone Leaf to hit the twine in a 3-1 defeat against the Roseau U10A team.
Then it was Miller scoring the only goal in a tight 3-1 setback to the Thunder Bay Tim Hortons Junior Timberwolves.
The “Blast” was put together at the last minute after the Fort Frances Girls’/Women’s Hockey Association cancelled its planned Atom, PeeWee, Bantam, and Midget ‘A’ tournaments for the weekend due to a lack of teams.
