Leafs finish third at tourney
Fort Frances Leafs girls’ 14U squad captured third place at the “Colder By the Lake” tournament in Superior, Wis. this past weekend.
Opening play Friday against Orono, Mn., the Leafs came out strong but trailed 2-0 after the first period.
Shelby Rea finally got the Leafs on the board, assisted by Jessica Robinson. Then just a minute later, Shelby Tymkin notched the equalizer, with the assist going to Taylor Hazel.
Tied at 2-2 heading into the third, Tymkin tallied her second of the game, unassisted, to put the Leafs ahead.
To a victory was not meant to be. Orono tied the score a few minutes later, then took the lead with just 2:21 left in the third to steal a 4-3 win.
The Leafs outshot Orono 34-24.
In Saturday’s game against River Lakes, Mn., Shilo Beck gave the Leafs a 1-0 lead at the 14.20 mark of the second period.
Despite end-to-end action, that score held up until the dying moments of the game. With the River Lakes’ goalie pulled for the extra attacker, Katie Sinclair, assisted by Tymkin, netted the insurance goal with 53 seconds left to give the Leafs the 2-0 victory.
Calie Clendenning earned the shutout in goal, turning away 18 shots.
Then it was all Leafs in their third game, outshooting the Duluth Icebreakers by a 34-14 margin.
After Rea found the net at the four-minute mark of the first, Sinclair made it 2-0, assisted by Danielle Jackson.
Tymkin then made it 3-0 thanks to a stretch pass from Liz Henderson.
After Duluth got their lone marker of the game a minute later, Hazel hit the mark, assisted by Rea.
Rea then capped the 5-1 win with three minutes to go, assisted by Tymkin.
With their first tournament of the season now under their belts, the Leafs next will travel to Thunder Bay to play in the Thunder Bay Queens Showcase.
They will open play Friday against the host Queens.
In other news, the Leafs played the Falls Bronco J.V team earlier last week, outshooting them 46-14 en route to a 4-3 win.
Scoring for the Leafs were Tymkin, Hailey Clendenning, Sinclair, and Beck.
