Late goal lifts Lakers

Julian Uhryniuk put the brakes on the Fort Frances Lakers’ bus before it went over the cliff.
He netted the game-winning goal with 1:48 left in the third period to give the Lakers a 4-3 win over the host Minnesota Iron Rangers on Tuesday night.
The Lakers (41-8-0-2) had a 3-1 lead midway through the second but the Iron Rangers (19-28-2-2) fought back to tie it.
In the end, Tanner Garnham and Ryley Bosman set up Uhryniuk, whose shot eluded Anthony Pupplo to give the Lakers their third-straight win.
Austin Ramirez opened the scoring for Minnesota at 11:36 of the first before Jack Bernie evened it at 16:11—becoming the 10th Laker to reach double digits in goals this season.
Christian Ripley made it 2-1 just 14 seconds later before Dylan Robertson scored 1:13 into the second for a two-goal cushion.
Logan Froberg (power play) drew Minnesota closer at 16:55, then Tristyn Sabina squared the affair at 4:31 of the third.
Brandon Bodnar made 31 saves to earn the win.
The Lakers went with just 14 skaters in the game, including only five defencemen.
One of those was Izzy Smith, who was called up from the Fort Frances Midget ‘AA’ Canadians on an emergency basis with veteran blueliners Davis Ross, Roshen Jaswal, and Robbie Bonthron all not dressing.
Also missing were Dylan Kooner and David Pryde, along with fellow forwards Cole Tymkin, Nolan Ross, and Jaden Gustafson.
But forward Andrew Willner and defenceman Brandon Zajicek were back in the lineup Tuesday night.
The Lakers next will visit the Thunder Bay North Stars (25-23-1-3) on Friday.
Then they’ll host the Dryden GM Ice Dogs (32-13-3-3) on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Ice For Kids Arena.
