Lakers’ summer camp moved

The Fort Frances Lakers’ annual summer camp will be held at a different venue than in years past.
The three-day event is set for July 19-21 at the new Couchiching arena, instead of at Bronco Arena over in International Falls.
“We just thought that it would be nice to have the camp on our side of the border,” said Lakers’ head coach and general manager Wayne Strachan.
“Couchiching is a sponsor of ours, and we thought it would be a good opportunity to help them with some ice rental,” he reasoned.
The first of four scrimmages is scheduled to take place at 8 p.m. on Friday, July 19.
A pair of scrimmages then will be held on Saturday, with a final on-ice session taking place on the Sunday morning.
While the Ice For Kids Arena here remains the home facility for the Lakers, Strachan did hint at the possibility of the team using the new arena at Couchiching more often.
“We have only briefly discussed it, but it presents an opportunity to possibly play a game or two out there,” he noted.
“It also may allow us to have a practice here and there on the weekend, or when time conflicts for us with the [Memorial Sports Centre] arenas,” Strachan added.
