The Fort Frances Lakers have reached unprecedented heights on the mountain of national junior hockey recognition.
After garnering an honourable mention in the Canadian Junior ‘A’ Hockey League top 20 rankings last week, the Lakers vaulted to No. 6 this week—the highest the organization has ever held.
Much of that had to do with the Lakers extending what’s now an eight-game winning streak with a pair of road wins over the weekend.
Fort Frances slammed the Wisconsin Wilderness 6-1 on Friday night, then doubled the Thunder Bay North Stars 8-4 on Saturday to improve to 9-1-0-1 while increasing their lead over the second-place Stars to four points.
Thunder Bay, which does hold two games in hand on the Lakers, was as high as No. 3 in the rankings last week.
But the loss to the Lakers sent the Stars plummeting to No. 15 this week.
The Lakers are back in action tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. when the Minnesota Iron Rangers visit the new Couchiching arena.
Defenceman Brandon Sinclair may not be available for Fort Frances.
He is listed as “day-to-day” with a lacerated shin he received while blocking a shot against the Wilderness on Friday.
