Lakers lose shootout in pre-season debut

Fort Frances Lakers’ fans got their first glimpse at what could be in store for their team this season–and got to stick around even longer than they expected.
Joel Nagy’s shootout marker gave the Minnesota Iron Rangers a 4-3 victory over the Lakers in the first SIJHL pre-season game for both teams Friday night at the Ice For Kids Arena.
Clayton Brown and Nagy tallied against Lakers’ goalie Rob Ivy in the shootout while Damien Carigni had the lone goal for the home team.
Brown netted a pair of markers in regulation time, with Harrison Bjurgo getting Minnesota’s other goal.
Jeff Venzon, Jaedin Ness, and Carigni, with 20 seconds left in the third period, beat Rangers’ goalie Jackson Nelson.
The two teams will complete the home-and-home series Wednesday in Hoyt Lakes.
The Lakers then will host the English River Miners this Friday at 7:30 p.m., before completing their exhibition schedule the following night in Red Lake against the Miners.
The SIJHL regular season begins Sept. 22 with the Lakers hosting the Thief River Falls Norskies.
