The Fort William North Stars (19-1) ran their winning streak to 13 games by disposing of the struggling Fort Frances Lakers (5-14-3) in a two-game weekend set in Thunder Bay.
The Stars fired 60 shots on goal Friday night, with Lakers’ goalie Jameson Shortreed standing on his head to keep the score a respectable 5-3 in favour of the defending SIJHL champs.
Then on Saturday, the home side’s snipers hit the mark with much more accuracy as they rolled to an 11-2 victory to remain a perfect 8-0 at home this season and stretch the Lakers’ losing skid to seven games.
Shortreed made 55 saves on Friday as Fort William held a whopping 60-23 shot advantage.
Somehow, the game was tied 2-2 until late in the second period when Trevor Gamache put the Stars in front to stay at 18:17.
Gamache scored again in the third while Dan Usiski, Devlin’s Jordan Davis, and Brennan Wright had singles for Fort William.
Tyler Stevenson paced the Lakers with three points, including a pair of goals to give him six for the season.
Colton Kennedy (his 14th) had the other marker for Fort Frances.
Jamie Brattengeier made 20 saves for the Stars to stay perfect this season with a 6-0 mark.
Saturday’s game also was tied past the midway point of the contest at 1-1 before the Stars’ prolific offence shredded the Lakers for 10 goals in the final 28 minutes.
Ryan Magill had a hat trick for Fort William while Travis Savard collected a pair of goals, with singles going to Olivier Morin, Riley Marsh, Gamache, Usiski, Stephan Gunner, and Adam Restoule.
Mike Jourdain and Henry Gutierrez each picked up their fourth goal of the year for Fort Frances.
Shortreed made 26 saves on 31 shots through two periods before being relieved in the third by T.J. Pocock, who allowed five goals on 21 shots.
Guillaume Piche needed only 15 saves to boost his season record to a league-leading 13-1.
Fort Frances will host the Wisconsin Mustangs tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. at the Ice For Kids Arena.
The Lakers also will be holding a Christmas bake sale and toy drive prior to the game.
