The Fort Frances Lakers hockey team will hold its annual general meeting next Monday evening. Board President Gary Silander is up for reelection as well as other board positions. They are also hoping to get the community more involved with the team.
“We want the community more involved,” Silander said. “We are a community owned team. The community supports us through ticket sales and stuff like that but we’re hoping to get people more physically involved to help out. We have a good core group but we need some helpers.”
Silander says he hopes to continue on as President of the board.
“We have some board of directors (positions) to replace,” Silander said. “My term is up too, hopefully I’ll get voted back in, but you never know.”
Silander said the hope is to also make it easier for more people to be involved if they don’t want to actually be members of the board.
“We have a lot of community members that would like to be involved but don’t want to sit on the board,” He said. “So we’re going to form some committees this year. We’ll have one board member representing the board as a committee member then volunteers can sit on the committee. Then there’s not quite the commitment of being a board member.”
This will enable community members to take some interest in the team without having to commit as much time. It would also speed things up for full board of directors meetings as well, he added.
“It will speed our meetings up too,” Silander said. “Instead of us hashing all the stuff out at a meeting that takes hours and hours. The committee can have their meeting on a Thursday afternoon if it works or whenever. Then when we get to our meeting we have a five minute update from the board member on that committee then we move on to the next one.”
The meeting will be Monday, May 16, at 7:00 p.m. in the meeting room at the Super 8 Hotel in Fort Frances. In addition to elections, the statement of the team’s financial position will be discussed. Anyone interested in getting involved with the Lakers is encouraged to attend.
