The Fort Frances Lakers are heading back to the SIJHL final after a dramatic 3-2 overtime win over the Dryden Ice Dogs in Game 7 of their semi-final series at the Ice For Kids Arena last night.
Trailing 2-0 with less than four minutes to go, defenceman Jon Carlson scored a power-play marker to pull the Lakers within one, then netted the game-tying goal during a goal-mouth scramble with just 15 seconds on the clock.
Jordan Christianson completed the comeback just past the six-minute mark of the first overtime, pouncing on a loose puck in front of the net and beating Ice Dogs’ goalie Eric Sczymcyk.
Mike Butler and Chris Belhumeur scored for the Ice Dogs.
The Lakers now face the Minnesota Wilderness, who have won the last two Bill Salonen Cups and also beat the Lakers for the title last year when they were based in Spooner, Wis.
The best-of-seven final tentatively is scheduled to open this Friday night in Cloquet.
