A Jacob Siebenga goal just over three-and-a-half minutes into overtime lifted the visiting Dryden GM Ice Dogs to a 4-3 win over the Fort Frances Lakers on Friday night at the Ice For Kids Arena.
Brett Hahkala opened the scoring for the Lakers 10:41 into the first period on a man advantage when he corralled the puck near the left face-off circle and rifled a shot top shelf over Ice Dogs’ goalie Jordan Wilde.
Nick Lucas then helped double the lead with 1:07 to go in the frame when he fed a pass from behind the net out front to Isaac Baron, who made no mistake through the five-hole.
But the second frame belonged to the Ice Dogs, who got a tally off the stick of Cameron Coutre just 52 seconds in before Rayman Bassi knotted it at 2-2 just over the 10-minute mark.
Kendyn Faragher then gave the Lakers the lead once again 3:23 into the third when he picked up a loose puck in the slot and wired a laser past Wilde to make it 3-2.
Faragher’s night came to an end just under three minutes later when he was ejected after fighting the Ice Dogs’ Malcolm Huemmert.
Dryden seemed to use that momentum to its advantage as Eric Stout found some room and sniped one past Lakers’ goalie Jacob Gnidziejko at 6:17 to force overtime.
Siebenga then won it for the visitors in the late stages of the extra frame when he cut across the middle of the ice and into the slot before snapping one past Gnidziejko.
Wilde made 24 saves earn the win while Gnidziejko stopped 44 of the attempts fired his way in a losing cause.
The fifth-place Lakers (11-19-1-0), who now have lost four-straight games, resume action this Wednesday when they head to Dryden to face the fourth-place Ice Dogs (15-12-3-1).
Then they’ll cap the week with a pair of home games.
Fort Frances will host the last-place Minnesota Iron Rangers (3-29-0-0) on Friday night before welcoming the third-place Thief River Falls Norskies (18-11-3-1) the following night at the Ice For Kids Arena.
Both games start at 7:30 p.m.
