Despite leading 3-1 lead in the second period, the Fort Frances Lakers fell 4-3 to the host Dryden Ice Dogs in a shootout last night.
After Colton Spicer and Dryden’s Austin Lewis traded goals in the first round of the shootout, it took until the fourth round for the game to be decided as Tyler Walsh beat Lakers’ goalie Tanner Hamilton.
Ice Dogs’ forward Rory Court led the team’s comeback with a pair of goals, with linemate Cole Sonstebo assisting on both plays.
Lewis scored the game-tying goal at the 8:23 mark of the third period.
Davis Smith, coming off his first career SIJHL hat trick in a win over Duluth last Saturday, led the Lakers again last night with a goal and an assist.
Alex Bruess and captain Merritt Rysavy also tallied.
Despite the loss, the Lakers did earn a single point for taking the game to a shootout, which moved the squad back into a tie for third place with the Thunder Bay North Stars.
Those two teams will go head-to-head in Thunder Bay tomorrow night before the Lakers conclude a three-game road swing Sunday in Duluth against the lowly Clydesdales.
