Lakers’ duo commits

Two now former Fort Frances Lakers will have new hockey homes this fall.
The team announced Saturday that Jared Virtanen, last season’s leading scorer, has committed to play for the ACHA Division I Calvin College Knights based out of Grand Rapids, Mich.
Virtanen, a 20-year-old forward from Abbotsford, B.C., had 74 points, including a league-high 52 assists, in 44 games in his lone season with the Lakers.
He also had five points in eight playoff games.
Meanwhile, Maverick Lynes, who is two days older than Virtanen, is bound for Portland, Maine to suit up for the NCAA Division III University of Southern Maine Huskies in the New England Hockey Conference.
Lynes, also a one-year Laker, led the team’s defencemen in scoring with 34 points in 56 games.
The Sherwood Park, Alta. native added another five points in eight playoff games.
