The Thunder Bay North Stars broke open a scoreless game with three third-period goals en route to a 3-0 win over the Fort Frances Lakers on Tuesday night at the Fort William Gardens.
Thunder Bay outshot Fort Frances 33-14 after 40 minutes but they couldn’t beat Lakers’ goalie Ismael Ralsten.
Avery Siau put the North Stars on the board when he swiped the puck from a defender and broke in alone.
He then cut left before tucking the night’s opening tally past Ralsten’s outstretched pad while short-handed at 6:50.
Ryan Mignault later connected just seconds after a Lakers’ penalty had expired as he lifted a backhand high over Ralsten from close range.
The Lakers pulled Ralsten in the final minute but Alexander Erwin knocked down a pass in the neutral zone before skating in and capping the scoring with an empty-netter.
Dougie Newhouse turned aside all 17 shots he faced to record his first SIJHL shutout.
Ralsten stopped 47 in taking the loss.
The Lakers (15-29-2-4) next are in action this Saturday when they host the fourth-place English River Miners (24-21-0-4) at 7:30 p.m. at the Ice For Kids Arena.
Fort Frances took the last meeting between the two squads by a 5-1 score back on Feb. 23.
The Dryden GM Ice Dogs (35-6-6-2) lead the SIJHL with 78 points while the Thief River Falls Norskies (36-9-1-2) are right behind at 75.
The North Stars (33-12-4-1) occupy third place with 71.
The Minnesota Iron Rangers (4-41-1-2) remain mired in the league basement with just 11 points.
