The Fort Frances Lakers are back atop the SIJHL—at least until tomorrow.
The Lakers scored three third-period goals to earn a 3-2 win Tuesday night in Cochenour against the English River Miners.
After a scoreless first period, the host Miners jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second on Alex Maticic’s goal.
Dylan Kooner tied it a minute-and-a-half into the third, then scored shorthanded just 19 seconds later to make it 2-1.
Jack Bernie made it 3-1 with six minutes to go.
The Miners (3-6-1-2) stormed back on Bryan Kromm’s power-play marker with less than four minutes left but they couldn’t net the equalizer.
Pierce Dushenko made 26 saves to earn the win while Reid Kilburn took the loss.
The win moved the Lakers (8-2-0-0) into first place—one point ahead of the Dryden GM Ice Dogs (7-2-1-0).
The Ice Dogs will have a chance to reclaim top spot tomorrow night when they host the Thunder Bay North Stars.
The Lakers, meanwhile, are back home Saturday at 7:30 p.m. to face the North Stars following a four-game road trip.
Then they’ll host the Minnesota Iron Rangers on Tuesday night (Oct. 27).
