Krag grabs junior squash event

Steven Krag of Fort Frances swept Cindy Arpin 3-0 in the final of the junior novice event at the Northwestern Squash Open in Thunder Bay last Sunday.
Krag advanced to the final after going 2-0 in round-robin play (sweeping each best-of-three match in two straight games).
Playing in his first competitive squash tournament, Krag admitted to being nervous on the court at first, but those nerves were quickly settled after he started racking up points.
“Once I started putting points together, it was a lot of fun,” said Krag, who hopes to continue playing competitively this year. “You never want to underestimate your opponent, and it was fun thinking about the strategy to keep your opponent moving.”
Other top local players at Thunder Bay included Bob Tkachuk, who won the ‘A’ consolation event, and Ben Andrusco, who captured the ‘C’ event with a 3-1 win over Jill Skogberg, 15, the ninth-ranked junior ladies’ player in the province.
Dustin Faragher won the ‘E’ novice consolation final with a 3-1 victory.
Mark Faragher (1-1 in the ‘B’ event), Al Christiansen (1-1 in the ‘B’ event), Jason Kabel (1-2 in the ‘C’ event), and Ron Campbell (1-1 in the ‘D’ event) also made the trip.
The next competitive squash action will be here Dec. 26 with the annual Boxing Day tournament.
A junior event is slated here Dec. 30, then a local contingent of players will be off to Winnipeg on Jan. 9 for a Manitoba junior event.
