For a wide receiver, Cole Kowalski makes a pretty good defensive back.
So good, in fact, that the second-year Muskie yesterday was named the WHSFL’s defensive player-of-the-week in the Andy Currie Division.
Kowalski, who had to leave his previous game with a charleyhorse, shone on both sides of the ball in last Friday’s 44-0 home-opening win over the Maples Marauders.
The black-and-gold’s dual threat returned an interception 58 yards for a touchdown, nearly had a second one on an incredible leaping attempt, and also recorded five tackles.
That’s not to mention his four catches for a game-high 118 yards and another touchdown while in his normal spot on offence.
“He’s a tremendous athlete that shows great passion and dedication to his team,” Muskie head coach Mike Cuzzolino said of Kowalski, who is the first Fort High player in recent memory to capture one of the WHSFL’s weekly honours.
The Muskies (1-2) will shoot for back-to-back wins tomorrow when they travel to Winnipeg to face the Daniel McIntyre Maroons (1-2).
Their next home game is set for Oct. 3 at 3 p.m. against the College Lorette Collegiate Scorpions, which also will be the squad’s annual Homecoming game.
