Knights tops in Kenora

The Fort Frances Knights of Columbus Peewee ‘AA’ hockey team were successful on the weekend of Nov. 30-Dec. 2 in capturing the championship of the Kenora Thistles tournament.
The Knights kicked off play with a 6-0 shutout over the Baudette Bears on the Friday morning, then followed that up with a 7-2 victory over the Steinbach Millers that evening.
On the Saturday morning, the Knights blanked the St. James Canadians from Winnipeg with another convincing shutout score of 5-0.
The team suffered its first loss, 4-1, to the host Kenora Thistles that evening.
That set up a semi-final rematch with Steinbach on the Sunday morning, with the Knights once again coming away with a solid 6-0 victory.
The tourney final pitted the Knights in a grudge match with the hometown Thistles. The Knights drew first blood in the first period and followed that up with another marker in the second.
To the delight of the Kenora fans, the Thistles responded with goals in the second and third periods to send the thrilling game to overtime.
While taking advantage of 4-on-3 play after Kenora was assessed a minor penalty, Jordan Larson stuffed home the winner on a nice pass from Colton Spicer.
The Knights’ game MVPs from the weekend included Brody McPherson, Davis Ross, Tyson Durbin, Hunter Leishman, and Larson.
Scott Parsons and Mark Loveday were solid between the pipes all weekend for the victors.
