Knights runners-up at tourney

The local Knights of Columbus PeeWee ‘AA’ hockey team had a highly-successful showing at the Tournament of Champions in Brandon, Man. from Feb. 7-10.
The Knights kicked off round-robin play with a 9-7 victory over the Regina Stars after shaking off a slow start—probably the effect of sluggish “bus legs.”
In their second game, the Knights played probably their best game of the season—rising to the challenge and defeating a very tough Yorkton Terriers squad by an 8-5 score.
The Knights followed that up with a one-sided 9-1 win against the Lorette Comets.
After finishing 3-0 in pool play, the Knights next faced the hometown Brandon Junior Wheat Kings in the playoff cross-over game.
The Wheat Kings, proving to be a strong skating, physical opponent, jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second period. But after a timely time-out by coach Don Larson, the Knights chipped away at the lead and eventually forced the game to overtime.
Neither team could score in the four-on-four frame and so the game went to a shootout to determine the winner.
After Colton Spicer and Jordan Larson had scored, Knights’ goalie Scott Parsons attoned for an earlier weak goal by stopping four shootout breakaways to secure the thrilling victory.
This set up a rematch against the Yorkton Terriers, who had defeated the Lumsden-Bethune Lions in their semi-final showdown.
The Saskatchewan team held a close 2-1 lead after two periods, but a second thrilling comeback within two days was not meant to be as the Knights fell 4-1 to their western foes.
Still, the team should be very proud of their runner-up finish as the tournament featured a strong line-up of top teams from Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Northwestern Ontario.
