The K of C Knights came oh so close to winning the PeeWee ‘AA’ tournament they hosted last weekend, falling 2-1 to the Dryden Apollos in ‘A’ final Sunday.
Dryden netted both its goals in the second period, but the Knights only could manage one in the third by Joe Basaraba, with David Chambers drawing the assist.
The Knights’ had opened the tourney Friday morning with a 5-3 win over the Kenora Thistles, who would go on to lose 2-1 to the West End Bruins (Thunder Bay) in the ‘B’ final.
The Thistles got on the board first in the second period, but the Knights answered with Basaraba (Ben Bruyere).
The Thistles got another, but the Knights’ Matt Goldamer (Dustin Brown) once again evened things at 2-2.
The Knights then scored three goals to the Thistles’ one in the third period with Jordan Sinclair (Goldamer/Chambers), Brandon Sinclair (J. Sinclair), and Goldamer (Brown) being the snipers.
The Knights then faced the KC Sportop Sabres (Thunder Bay) later Friday but were edged 4-3.
The Sabres had jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but Goldamer (J. Sinclair) trimmed the score to 3-1 before the Sabres got another goal late in the period.
Basaraba (B. Sinclair/J. Sinclair) and Bruyere (Steven Romaniuk) netted third-period goals to make it close.
The Knights began play Saturday with a dominating 9-1 win over the Sioux Hawks (Sioux Lookout). Romaniuk (Brendan Cawston) got things started in the first, followed by Cawston (Cam Badiuk), Chambers (Brown), and Romaniuk (unassisted).
Goldamer (J. Sinclair) continued the onslaught in the second period, then the Knights added five goals in the second half of the third to ice the easy win.
Cawston (Romaniuk), Shane Beck (Basaraba/Chris Legg), Basaraba (Chambers), and Goldamer (B. Sinclair) were the goal scorers.
The Neebing Hawks were next and a 6-3 win would result, putting the Knights into the ‘A’ final.
J. Sinclair (Goldamer), Goldamer (Brown/J. Sinclair), Basaraba (Brown/Romaniuk), Chambers (Goldamer/J. Sinclair), Goldamer (Basaraba), and Basaraba (unassisted) got the goals.
The Fort Frances Affiliate Flyers also participated in the eight-team tournament. They started with a 6-2 loss to the Dryden Apollos in a game they led 2-1 after the first period.
Jeff Cridland (Chris Bobczynski) and Mike George (Cridland/Bobczynski) were the goal scorers.
The Flyers then were blanked 7-0 by the West End Bruins later Friday before falling 8-0 to the Neebing Hawks on Saturday morning.
After a 5-1 loss to the Kenora Thistles later Saturday in the semi-finals (Andrew Milling, from Thomas Oakes, got the lone goal), the Flyers ended the tournament on a bright note Sunday morning with a 2-0 win over the Sioux Hawks in the ‘B’ consolation final.
Luke Henry (Cridland/Bobczynski) and Bobczynski (Cridland) scored the goals.
