Kenora team edges out competition in Morson Bass Classic

It was a battle of the top five teams from Day One of fishing to see who would be crowned the 10th-annual Morson Bass Classic champs.
Reuben and Allan Gibbins lead after the first day of fishing with five fish weighing in at 16.65 lbs.
They were followed by Fred Greene and Pat Handorgan Sr. with 16.35 lbs. In third was Dean Smith and Bart Stebnitsky with 15.97 lbs.
In fourth place was the tournament crowd favourites uncle Bill Godin and nephew Bryce Godin with 15.21 lbs. And rounding out the top five was last year’s champs Frank McClymont and Rick Savage 14.92 lbs.
At the end of the second day, all of these teams came in with good weights again. However, it was Dean Smith and Bart Stebnitsky of Kenora who came out on top with 32.45 lbs. to win the $5,000 purse. That is the largest top prize ever paid out at the MBC.
Coming in second was Fred Greene and Pat Handorgan Sr. with 31.79 lbs. to net $3,500.
Taking third was Reuben and Alan Gibbins with 30.7 lbs. for a prize of $1,500.
In fourth was Bill and Bryce Godin with 30.38 lbs. for a prize of $800.
Staying in fifth was Savage and McClymont with 29.79 lbs. for a prize of $500.
David Byrnes/Andrea Turgeon came in 6th, Bill Luney/John Gibbins 7th, Bruce Knowlan/Luke Pennig 8th, Almer/Dan Godin 9th and Chris Savage/Dennis Favreau 10th.
They respectively earned $400, $300, $300, $250 and $250.
Byrnes and Turgeon also picked up $500 for the largest small mouth on day 1 (3.93 lbs). Savage/McClymont landed the biggest large mouth of day 1 for $500 (3.98 lbs.).
On Day Two, the champs caught the largest smallie for $500 (4.3 lbs.)
Jess and Chloe Swenson of Sioux Narrows caught the biggest large mouth for $500 (4.8 lbs.).
The hidden weight for the tournament was 14.63 lbs. with at two day total of 14 lbs., Dallas Mosbeck and Jeff Gustafson won a trolling motor.
Taking home the coveted T-Rex kids fishing rod was Stewart McNally and Cory Lindal of Rainy River for catching no fish.
