The third-annual Nestor Falls Softball Tournament was held this past weekend at Bass Lake Park, with nine teams taking part in the event from Thursday to Saturday, with the final games taking place on Sunday.
Although the weather on Saturday left little to be desired, with rain and high winds throughout the day, it only stopped play for 15 minutes, and the team were able to play through all day.
The conditions on Sunday turned out beautifully and numerous spectators came out to watch the games, which lasted until the evening.
The tourney had three teams from Onigaming First Nations in Nestor Falls (B-Line, Team 8, and Dy-no-mite), two teams from Fort Frances (Beef’s Warriors and The Clippers) and Emo (Fubar and The Slugs), and one team each from Kenora (The Chewbaccas) and Nestor Falls (Nestor Falls Flyers).
The second last game of the tournament saw the Chewbaccas facing off against the Clippers, with the Chewbaccas needing to beat the Clippers twice in order win the title.
The Kenora team won that contest, and then had a tense final game with the Clippers that saw a tied score going into the last inning.
After some big hits, quick double plays, and awesome catches, the Chewbaccas were able to win the championship by a single run.
The organizers would like to thank all the teams for their interest in the tournament, and to everyone who helped to volunteer.
