Bar-B-Q Bobs (Kenora) downed tagg’s (Fort Frances) 3-1 to win the ‘A’ crown at the annual Novice hockey tournament last weekend at the Emo-La Vallee Community Centre.
Bryan Wolfe pace the Bobs with two goals while Joelle Charlebois added the other. The tagg’s goal scorer was not available.
The Bobs went undefeated throughout the 12-team tourney, whitewashing Rainy River (6-0) and the Fort Frances Eagles (5-0) before blanking the Subway Sharks (Fort Frances) 2-0 in the semi-finals.
tagg’s blanked Emo OPP 2-0 in the other semi-final, with goals coming from Tyler Harris and Brian White. The Fort squad started out with shutout wins over the Dryden Sharks (7-0) and Times Tigers of Fort Frances (2-0).
But the Times Tigers stormed back, doubling the Dryden Sharks 4-2 and then downing the Keewatin Blues 3-1 to reach the ‘B’ final against the West End Eagles (Fort Frances).
And the Tigers continued to roar, getting the game-winner from Josh Sigurdson with just over a minute to play for the narrow 2-1 victory.
Paul Dobransky also scored for the Tigers while Michael Ignace netted a first-period goal to give the Eagles a brief 1-0 lead.
The Eagles advance to the ‘B’ final with a 2-1 win over Foodtown (Fort Frances) on Cole Derkson’s goal at 1:52 of the third. Kyle Sigurdson had given the Eagles a 1-0 lead in the first but Brandon Roden tied things up midway through the second.
The ‘C’ final was decided in the second period when the Emo Wings hammered home four goals en route to a 6-1 win over the Dryden Sharks.
Nathan Brigham (two), Nathan Bear Kelly, Michael Badiuk, Tyson Romyn, and Richard Wieringa scored for Emo while Dustin Hayunga netted Dryden’s lone goal.
The Wings reached the final with a 6-0 shutout over Rainy River. Romyn led the way with two goals while Brock Benjamin, Brigham, and Richard Wieringa added singles.
Dryden advanced after taking out Skates and Blades (Fort Frances) 5-3. Miles Pitchenese and Cody Szachury each scored a pair of second-period goals after Taylor Gardiner’s tally in the first.
Mitchell Green (two) and Kyle Kerr replied for Fort Frances.
