Colton Spicer scored 2:26 into overtime to give the local PeeWee ‘AA’ Knights of Columbus a 4-3 win over the Thunder Bay Volunteer Pool Bearcats in the final of their home tournament here yesterday.
The winning goal capped a remarkable offensive performance for Spicer in which he netted a natural hat trick.
“Colton had a very good weekend,” Knights’ head coach Wayne Strachan said after the game. “He’s very gifted offensively when he moves his feet and he’s working hard.
“I think he had three hat tricks this weekend,” Strachan added. “Certainly the guys playing with were helping him out, but it’s great because a player on a roll can lead you to big things.”
Brady McMahon also scored for the Knights in the first period.
The Knights appeared to have the game well in hand after Spicer scored his second goal of the game—this time on a penalty shot—late in the third period to give his team a 3-1 lead.
But Kevin Kurm cut the deficit to a goal moments later with his second marker of the afternoon, setting up a frantic finish.
Desperate to tie the game in the waning moments of the third, Bearcats’ head coach Peter de Haan pulled goalie Brandon Basaraba with 30 seconds to go in favour of the extra attacker.
And the gamble paid off as Eric Burton collected a loose puck in the high slot, turned, and beat Knights’ goalie Scott Parsons with a low wrist shot to send the game to overtime.
Both goalies made huge saves to keep their teams alive early in the overtime period before Spicer ended the contest with his third goal of the game.
The Norwest Stars (Thunder Bay) blanked the Kenora Thistles 3-0 in the ‘B’ final of the eight-team tournament yesterday morning.
