KCs finish banner season with fourth tourney title

The local KC PeeWee hockey rep team shut out DePere (Wis.) 4-0 Sunday afternoon to win the ‘A’ final of the eight-team International Invitational Tournament in International Falls.
Nathan Miller, assisted by A.J. Tucker, opened the scoring just 6:45 into the first period. The KCs then dominated play in the second, increasing their lead to 3-0 after 30 minutes.
Donald Kellar made it 2-0 when he scored on a nifty three-way passing play with Miller and Tucker at the 7:50 mark. Steve VanDulmen later scored with just 28 seconds left in the period to stake the KCs to a commanding lead.
Tucker, assisted by Jeff Friesen, then scored on a wraparound midway through the third to ice the victory.
Dustin Tkachyk was solid in goal for the KCs, stopping all 20 DePere shots to earn the shutout.
The KCs breezed through their two games, trouncing Proctor (Mn.) 11-1 and then Baudette 7-1 to reach the final.
Kris Esselink and A.J. Tucker each had a hat trick in the Proctor win while Bryce Witherspoon, Dennis Morrison, Clayton Windigo, Miller, and Kellar added singles.
Tucker (three), VanDulmen, Friesen, Kellar, and Ira Ottertail scored in the rout over Baudette.
The KCs also won the tournament’s shootout against host International Falls, with Miller scoring the eventual winner.
International Falls won the third-place game against Baudette by a 5-1 score.
It was yet another tournament victory for the KCs–their fourth this season. In fact, the team reached the final in all eight tournaments they played, finishing second in the other four.
Sunday also marked the final game for most of the players at the PeeWee level. Just four of the team’s 15 players will be back next season, with most to move up to the Bantam BoMacs.
