The local K of C ‘AA’ PeeWee hockey team split a pair of games over the holidays, dumping visiting International Falls 7-1 on Saturday but losing 6-5 against host Steinbach last Friday.
Andrew Morrison, assisted by Riley Burnell, had given the Falls an early 1-0 lead but it was all KCs after that.
Jared Catholique-Bruyere (from Alex McQuarrie) tied the score less than a minute later. Then after Larry Pham (Tyler Miller) put the KCs up 2-1, Scott McFayden netted an unassisted tally barely 20 seconds later to make it 3-1 heading into the second period.
Pham (David Pierce) and Cody Dittaro (Justin Larson) scored second-period goals to make it 5-1 after two, then Paul Dobransky and Catholique-Bruyere iced the win with unassisted tallies in the third.
The KCs were coming off a tough 6-5 loss to Steinbach there the day before.
The teams traded two goals to start the first frame, with the KCs getting tallies from Josh Sigurdson (Shawn Egan/Andrew Perrault) and Larson (unassisted).
Myles Stoesz netted both goals for Steinbach.
But with just 52 seconds left in the opening period, Kyle Dyck put the hosts up 3-2 heading into the second.
After Anthony Giesbrecht scored unassisted early in the second, Pham (Miller) brought the KCs to within 4-3. But Stoesz completed his hat trick to give Steinbach a two-goal lead again.
Dobransky got one of those back late in the second to make it 5-4 but Steinbach replied with one early in the third.
Catholique-Bruyere (Perrault) then pulled the KCs back to within one less than a minute later but, while holding Steinbach off the scoreboard the rest of the way, they could not net the equalizer.
Dobransky was unassisted in netting Fort Frances’ fourth goal.
