The Muskie junior girls’ basketball team jumped out to a big first-half lead, then hung on in the second to eke out a 34-30 win over the visiting Thomas Aquinas Saints last Wednesday afternoon.
“They did quite well for their first game–all the girls got to play,” coach noted Dave Ashworth.
Ashworth noted most of his starters played in the first half, when the black-and-gold built up a 20-10 margin. But the Saints outscored the Muskies 20-14 in the second half to make the final score close.
“It got close in the second half,” admitted Ashworth. “Which was a learning experience but they came through with flying colours.
“The girls had fun. It would have been heartbreaking if they wouldn’t have won,” he added.
Andrea Boileau led the Muskies with four points in the first half while Allison Hyatt and Sarah Barton each netted three. Tricia Smith, Melanie Hyatt, Erin Devlin, Megan Hebert, and Malarie Woolsey had two points apiece.
Woolsey paced the juniors in the second half with six points, followed by Barton, Devlin, Boileau, and Smith with two each.
“We will build on the positive things and look at the negatives and build on them,” said Ashworth. “For the first game, all in all, they did really well.”
