Junior squashers qualify for winter games

Steven Boileau (boys’ under 13), Steve Krag and Megan Canfield (under 17), and Richard Allan and Sarah Noonan (under 19) all will represent Northwestern Ontario at the Games coming up March 14-15 in Guelph.
Three of the five also are ranked provincially by Squash Ontario. Noonan is ninth, Richard Allan is 22nd and Krag is 29th in their respective divisions.
Team members were chosen based on their records in round-robin play throughout the weekend (thus no scores were available). In all, 26 juniors tried out for berths.
Their coaches, Bob and Mary-Beth Tkachuk, will join head coach Bob Shine as assistant coach and manager, respectively.
“I’m very pleased with their performance,” said Bob Tkachuk. “Especially with how are younger players are developing.”
Back in 2000, four players—Krag, Canfield, Drew Allan, and Noonan—qualified for the regional team.
As with any tryouts, there were some who fell short. Brian Glavish (under 13), Cole Doerksen (boys’ under 15), Sandi Elliot (girls’ under 13), and Derek Allan (boys’ under 13) and Drew Allan (boys’ under 17) failed to make the team.
But Glavish will participate in a Squash Ontario gold tournament Feb. 23.
