Junior spikers win tourney

The junior girls’ volleyball team struck gold at an eight-team tournament in Dryden this weekend.
“They played extremely well,” remarked head coach Struchan Gilson. “The more games they played, the more they improved.”
Gilson said he split his squad into two teams, with the majority of veterans playing on one team and rookies on the other.
Both teams topped their respective divisions after round-robin play but the team that was made up of rookies went on to capture the entire tournament.
“The rookies went ahead and won the entire tournament but [I figure] no matter how I split the team, they would have won,” Gilson stressed.
He enthused his rookies are really strong–and are very coachable.
The other teams that participated in the tournament hailed from host Dryden (two), Beaver Brae (Kenora), St. Thomas Aquinas (Kenora), Sioux Lookout, and Red Lake.
