The Muskie junior girls’ volleyball squad may not have a win in NorWOSSA play yet, but they have a medal to show for their efforts after a weekend tournament in Kenora.
Fort High’s “Black” squad, which featured the team’s developed players, captured bronze at the “Winter Blast” tourney, winning 13 of the 17 sets they played.
“Black” won nine of the 10 sets during the round-robin portion, starting off with a split against Dryden “Gold” (winning 25-23 before falling 25-6).
From there, the squad swept Thomas Aquinas “White” (25-21, 25-20), Westgate “Orange” (25-19, 25-18), Hammarskjold (25-23, 25-15), and then Bai Bom Beh (25-20, 25-21).
“Black” then swept the Kenora Broncos (25-23, 25-20) in the quarter-finals but were bounced by Thomas Aquinas “Black” 2-0 (25-17, 25-18) in the semi-finals.
With the loss, Fort High was relegated to the bronze-medal match, where they edged Portage Collegiate 2-1 (12-25, 26-24, and 15-11) to bring home some hardware.
Meanwhile, the Muskie “Gold” squad, comprised of the team’s developing players, split four of their six round-robin matches and were swept in the other two.
“Gold” kicked things off with a split against Dryden “Blue,” winning 25-22 and losing 25-23, split with Atikokan (winning 30-28 and losing 25-22), and then were swept 2-0 by Thomas Aquinas “Red” (25-12, 25-17).
“Gold” got back to their splitting ways against Westgate “Black,” winning 25-14 and losing 25-21, and Beaver Brae (winning 25-21 and losing 25-22).
But Portage Collegiate swept the Fort High crew 2-0 (25-21, 25-13) in their final round-robin action.
That put FFHS “Gold” on the consolation side, where they fell 2-1 to Atikokan (25-18, 21-25, and 15-10).
In NorWOSSA action last Thursday, the complete Muskie team was tamed 3-1 by the visiting Kenora Broncos (21-25, 25-21, 26-24, and 25-22) to fall to 0-4 in league play.
Meanwhile, Muskie senior spikers also were busy over the weekend participating in the Kenora Invitational. But the black-and-gold could not advance past the round-robin stage, winning just six of their 12 sets.
Fort High opened with a 1-1 split against the Sir Winston Churchill Trojans, were swept 2-0 by the St. Thomas Aquinas Saints, and then rebounded to earn a 1-1 split with the Hammarskjold Vikings.
The Muskies finished third of four teams in round-robin one.
In round-robin two, the Muskies were swept 2-0 by the La Verendrye Vipers, but rebounded to sweep the Superior Gryphons and Westgate Tigers.
The Muskies placed second in the pool, but needed a first-place showing to advance to the consolation round.
In NorWOSSA action here last Thursday, the senior spikers downed Kenora 3-1 (25-17, 25-18, 14-25, and 25-21) to improve to 3-1 on the year.
The Muskie boys’ basketball teams romped to victories in their NorWOSSA showdowns against Kenora last Thursday, with the juniors winning 52-26 while the seniors triumphed 66-33.
All four court teams next see action tomorrow (Jan. 14) when Dryden comes to town.
Play begins at 3:30 p.m. with the senior boys’ basketball and junior girls’ volleyball squads, followed by junior boys’ basketball and senior girls’ volleyball at 5 p.m.
