The Muskie junior girls’ volleyball team opened action with a home tournament over the weekend.
The team was split into two squads and fared well during round-robin play, but both teams were eliminated in the quarter-finals.
Team “Black” took first place in their pool with two wins and a pair of ties, but then fell to Atikokan in the quarter-finals by scores of 25-23, 21-25, and 12-15.
Team “Gold,” meanwhile, earned five points in round-robin play—good for third in their division—with two wins, one loss, and a tie.
That squad then was swept by Dryden “Blue” in the quarter-finals (23-25, 21-25).
“The girls worked very hard throughout the whole event,” new Muskie coach Jason Cain enthused. “Although we came up short in the end, both teams stayed positive and look forward to their next set of games in Kenora on Dec. 9.”
Muskie “Black” had opened the tournament with a tie against St. Thomas Aquinas, losing the first set 25-23 before taking the second one 26-24, then swept Dryden “Blue” by scores of 25-22 and 25-17.
Then they split two sets against the Jacks, a Dryden club team, by scores of 16-25 and 28-26 before wrapping up round-robin play with a 25-16, 25-21 sweep over Whitefish Bay.
Muskie “Gold” beat St. Thomas Aquinas “Red” to open the tournament by scores of 25-19 and 25-15.
Then they lost to Dryden “Gold” (22-25, 16-25) before recovering with a win over Atikokan (25-11, 25-16). They wrapped up the round-robin with a split versus Pelican Falls (25-17, 13-25).
All four Muskie court teams will kick off their NorWOSSA seasons Dec. 9 in Kenora.
