Junior spikers earn tourney gold


It was an impressive weekend for the Muskie junior and senior girls’ volleyball teams.
The juniors went undefeated en route to winning gold at the “Winter Blast” tournament hosted by the Kenora Broncos on Friday and Saturday.
The Muskies won each of their round-robin matches in straight sets in Pool ‘C’ play on Friday, which included wins over the host Broncos’ ‘B’ squad (25-15/25-5), St. Ignatius Falcons (25-10/25-20), Rainy River Owls (25-14/25-9), and Saints (25-11/25-9).
Then they went undefeated in the playoffs en route to the title.
The Muskie ‘B’ team, meanwhile, compiled a 1-3 record in Pool ‘A’ play.
That included straight-sets losses to the Saints’ ‘A’ team (17-25/22-25), the Pelican Falls Wolverines (22-25/20-25), and Westgate Tigers (17-25/7-25) but they did have their own straight-sets win over the Sioux Lookout Warriors (25-15/25-17) to finish 11th.
As for the seniors, they claimed the silver medal at the same tournament with a hard-fought, three-set loss to the Saints in Saturday’s final by scores of 22-25, 25-17, and 11-15.
The Muskies had gone undefeated in the round-robin in Pool ‘B’ play, which included wins over the host Broncos (25-17/25/15), Falcons (25-20/25-11), Hammarskjold Vikings (25-22/25-10), and Owls (25-10/25-15).
The black-and-gold then beat the St. Patrick Saints (Thunder Bay) 26-24 and 24-10 in Saturday’s quarter-final before ousting the Warriors in straight sets in the semi-finals by scores of 25-20 and 25-17.
In boys’ basketball action, both the Muskie juniors and seniors attended the St. Ignatius Falcons’ Invitational tournament Friday and Saturday.
The seniors claimed the bronze medal with a 71-46 win over the Westgate Tigers while the juniors went 0-3 to finish out of medal contention.
All four Muskie teams will resume NorWOSSA action tomorrow afternoon when they host the Dryden Eagles before welcoming the Kenora Broncos on Thursday.
