Junior hoopsters win Kenora tourney

The Muskie junior boys’ basketball team continued its winning streak, dumping Mennonite Brethren High School (Winnipeg) by a 61-43 count Saturday in the final of a tournament in Kenora.
John Sivonen paced the Muskies with a game-high 30 points and was named the tournament MVP. Evan Woodland added 15 points.
Both players also were named to the tournament all-star team.
Head coach Claude Gagnon said his team saved their best game of the tournament for the final, led by the offensive talents of Sivonen and Woodland and the defensive play of Terry Richards and Mark Mercure.
Richards also averaged seven points a game in the team’s three victories, which saw their overall record improve to 12-0 on the season.
“We surprised many teams by our determination and our play,” said Gagnon. “I was pleased with the effort and good spirit of my players.
“The referees said they were impressed with our discipline and our enthusiasm,” he added.
The Muskies opened the tournament with a convincing 65-45 victory over the Churchill Trojans (Thunder Bay). Leading by just one point at the break (25-24), the black-and-gold dominated the second half.
Sivonen had a game-high 24 points while Woodland netted 12, despite being in foul trouble for most of the game. Mercure also added eight points.
The black-and-gold then beat Daniel MacIntyre (Winnipeg) 66-55, once again led by Sivonen, who had 23 points. Gary Wager added 16.
The junior Muskies resume action Saturday when all four floor teams visit Dryden in NorWOSSA action.
