The Muskie junior boys’ basketball team continued its winning ways with four-straight victories at a tournament in Dryden over the weekend.
The black-and-gold opened with a 56-20 win over Kenora, led by 13 points apiece from Dustin Chiefson and Dustin Eyolfson.
The squad followed that up with a sound 65-38 trouncing of Sioux Lookout, getting a game-high 14 points from Cody Brown while Garnet Paxon chipped in 10.
The Muskies next beat the host Eagles by a 56-29 score, getting 16 points from Chiefson, 15 from Eyolfson, and 10 from Brown.
Fort High finished its undefeated string with a 66-44 win over St. Thomas Aquinas (Kenora) to claim top spot.
Dustin Eyolfson was red-hot in scoring 21 points while Joey Ballan netted 18.
“We had a really good weekend,” Muskie coach Greg Ste. Croix said. “We took the ball to the basket, and on the lay-ups we didn’t make, our inside game has improved to the point where we were able to get rebounds and put those in.
“It was a good confidence-builder and some guys really developed,” he added. “We’re working on controlling the game, playing the kind of game that we want to play, which means driving the basket, making easy shots, and getting the ball back when we miss shots.
“Off the backboard and in is what I tell the boys,” Ste. Croix stressed.
The Muskies were in Baudette for an exhibition game last night (the result was unavailable at press time) and don’t resume NorWOSSA play until Feb. 5 in Kenora due to first-semester exams.
