The local junior men’s and women’s rinks are off to a rough start at the provincial playdowns in Sault Ste. Marie.
Despite several close calls, both rinks still were searching for their first win heading into action this afternoon.
Adam Bolen’s rink suffered its third-straight defeat with a narrow 10-8 setback to Mark Greco (Schumacher).
Bolen stumbled out of the gates yesterday, losing their opening match 7-3 to Eric Theriault (Fort William) and then dropping a 9-8 heart-breaker to Ryan Harnden later in the day.
Bolen’s missed angle tap in the 10th end allowed Harnden to count one, giving the host rink the victory.
In junior women’s action, Jenna Enge’s rink also fell to 0-3 with a 10-2 loss to Tracy Horgan (Sudbury) this morning.
They had opened play yesterday afternoon with a 6-5 loss to Ashley Miharija (Fort William).
Enge had a chance to win the game in the 10th end but her draw attempt rubbed a Miharija rock in the four-foot and slid wide—allowing Miharija to steal a point and win the game.
Then the rink experienced more bad luck in their next game against Vanessa Maloney (Sudbury) yesterday evening.
With Enge leading 7-6 through seven, Maloney scored two in both the eighth and ninth ends to earn the 10-7 come-from-behind victory.
Bolen will be back on the ice at 11:30 a.m. (CST) against Curtis D’Amour’s winless New Liskeard rink before wrapping up round-robin play Ryan Lilly (Sudbury) tomorrow morning.
Only the top two rinks advance to the junior men’s final.
But Enge still has a chance. Because there’s just four teams vying for the junior women’s crown, Enge is playing in the 3 vs. 4 game under the Page playoff format.
She’ll be looking to avenge her earlier loss to Maloney.
The winner of that game then will advance against the loser of the 1 vs. 2 game between Miharija and Horgan, with that winner then advancing to tomorrow’s final against the winner of this afternoon’s 1 vs. 2 game.
