Jr. spikers nab silver in Kenora

The Muskie junior boys’ volleyball team participated in the Kenora Invitational tournament over the weekend between games in Dryden on Thursday and here at home yesterday.
The squad finished round-robin action in second place with nine wins and three losses.
In the quarter-finals, the Muskies beat the host Broncos in two sets by identical 25-18 scores, then they swept the Westgate Tigers (Thunder Bay) in the semi-finals by scores of 25-22 and 25-23.
In the final against the Dryden Eagles, the Muskies struggled at the end of the first set and lost 25-17. They battled back in the second set but came up on the short end of a 28-26 score to settle for the silver medal.
Fort High opened round-robin play Friday afternoon by splitting the two sets with Thomas Aquinas (Red), winning the opener 25-22 but then falling 25-21 in the second one.
They swept Thomas Aquinas (Black) 25-15 and 25-18, split with the Kenora Broncos (16-25 and 25-16), and swept Westgate 25-23 and 25-14 before splitting with the Dryden Eagles (Blue) by scores of 25-22 and 18-25.
Fort High wrapped up round-robin play Saturday morning by sweeping the Dryden Eagles (Gold) by scores of 25-20 and 25-14.
The Muskies actually ended up tied for first with the Dryden Eagles (Blue) but were dropped down to second due to a worse point differential.
Head coach Duane Roen was impressed with the team’s discipline and hard work, including veterans Chris Legg, Steve Romaniuk, and Justin Anderson as well as rookies Braedon Keast, Brent George, and Cody Vangel.
