The Muskie junior girls’ volleyball team split into two squads for its final tournament of the season over the weekend in Dryden.
Team #1 finished second in pool play and advanced to the quarter-finals, ousting the Westgate Tigers (Thunder Bay) in a straight-sets victory by scores of 25-19 and 25-16.
That set the stage for a semi-final battle with the host Eagles but Fort High fell short of advancing to the final, losing both sets by scores of 25-19 and 25-20.
In pool play, the Muskies had beaten St. Thomas Aquinas (25-15, 25-14), St. Ignatius (25-14, 25-21), the Whiskey Jacks (25-21, 25-7), and Churchill (25-19, 25-6) before losing to Pelican Falls (14-25, 25-27) and then splitting with Dryden #2 (25-11, 17-25).
Muskie Team #2, meanwhile, finished in a three-way tie for third in their pool, but missed the medal round through a tie-breaker format based on points for and against.
In round-robin play, Team #2 split with St. Ignatius (25-16, 22-25), Churchill (25-27, 28-26), Westgate (25-19, 7-25), and Kenora (25-21, 18-25), beat the Whiskey Jacks 2 (25-19, 25-9), and lost to Dryden (17-25, 15-25).
Dryden emerged as the tourney champs with a straight-sets victory over Pelican Falls in the final.
