The four Muskie court teams headed to Kenora to face the Broncos in NorWOSSA action last Thursday but only the junior boys’ volleyball team managed to return with a victory.
“We played really well Thursday, I was really happy with the kids,” head coach Duane Roen said.
“We struggled a fair bit against Dryden here the week before [Oct. 9], so we spent the remainder of the time talking about communicating, transition, so we wouldn’t run into those problems,” he added.
The time in practice seemed to pay off as the Muskies swept the best-of-five match by scores of 25-15, 25-17, and 25-21.
“We played a bad game against Dryden before and we needed that to get our spirits up,” setter Steve Romaniuk said. “We were calling it a lot better, and talking out there.”
Middle Chris Legg agreed the big change between the loss to the Eagles and sweeping the Broncos was pure communication.
“People wouldn’t know whose volleyball it was, and it would just hit the ground,” he remarked. “Our practice was pretty much all talking before [the game], so it helped a bit.”
“There’s a lot of skill on the team,” Roen stressed. “There are still some kids who are struggling with understanding where they need to be, but that’s part of junior volleyball.”
It remains to be seen whether the sweep will carry some momentum into the team’s last four games of the regular season.
“We’re hopin’,” Roen said. “There were a lot of smiles after that match in Kenora.”
The Muskie senior boys, however, still haven’t won a set in league play so far this season after falling 25-14, 25-13, and 25-8 to the host Broncos on Thursday.
Things didn’t look much better on the basketball court in Kenora, where both Muskie girls’ teams lost.
The seniors fell 28-22 after having defeated the Broncos here just a week before by a score of 22-13.
The junior girls also lost, coming out on the short end of a 28-17 score.
The four court teams next head to Dryden tomorrow to open the second half of their eight-game regular seasons.
