Having been the class of the three team NorWOSSA league in the regular season, the Muskie junior girls basketball team solidified their status as the team to beat in the 2011 season as they captured the league championship yesterday in Dryden.
With a 7-1 regular season mark assuring them of a place in the finals, the black-and-gold ran the Kenora Broncos right off of the floor in the finals at they cruised to a 28-4 victory.
That win was the eighth in a row in NorWOSSA play for the Muskies, whose only set back came during the season opener in Dryden on Sept. 22.
Meanwhile, the third seeded senior girls basketball team ended up falling in their semi-final game to the Broncos by a score of 29-13.
The Dryden Eagles would go on to win the title game over Kenora.
As for the volleyball teams, both the junior and senior Muskies were able to win their semi-final contests over Kenora, but would both come up short in the final against the perennial powers from Dryden.
The junior spikers clinched their birth into the final with a thrilling five-set win (25-21, 19-25, 23-25, 25-17, and 15-10) over Kenora in the semis, before falling to the host Eagles in the finals in straight sets (6-25, 21-25, and 20-25).
As for the senior squad, their NorWOSSA championship dreams ended in heartbreaking fashion as they lost to Dryden in five sets (22-25, 25-23, 25-18, 17-25, and 8-15) following a straight set semi-final triumph over Kenora.
