Jackson rink falters at provincials

Lorne Jackson’s bid to represent Northern Ontario at the Tim Hortons Brier next month in Hamilton is in serious jeopardy.
The Fort Frances skip—along with third Don DeBenedet, second Derek Jackson, and lead Mike Kjerulf—lost both their games yesterday to drop to 1-3 at the Dominion of Canada Northern Ontario playdowns in Sudbury.
Tom Armstrong (Kirkland Lake) built up a 4-0 lead through three ends against Jackson in the draw yesterday afternoon.
Jackson scored two in the fifth to cut the deficit in half. But after the teams exchanged singles, Armstrong scored four in the seventh en route to the 9-3 victory.
Then last night, Jackson took an early 1-0 lead against Jeff Zechner (Nipigon). But Zechner stormed back, scoring six over the next four ends to take a commanding 6-1 lead at the fifth-end break.
Jackson managed a single in the sixth, but Zechner’s deuce in the seventh paved the way to an eventual 8-2 victory.
Jackson’s rink was second last in the nine-team standings heading into action today.
They were looking to get back into the win column this afternoon when they faced Tim Phillips (Sudbury), who was sitting in fourth place with a 3-2 record.
Jackson then will square off against Rob Gordon (Cobalt-Haileybury) in the 6 p.m. (EST) draw.
Gordon was in sixth place at 2-2 heading into play today.
