Jackson rink fails to advance to provincials

The Lorne Jackson rink of Fort Frances failed to advance to the provincial playdowns after finishing with a 2-3 record at the Northwestern Ontario men’s showdown in Terrace Bay last week.
Jackson’s rink, which included Don DeBenedet, Derek Jackson, and Mike Kjerulf, began play Thursday with an 11-3 loss to Marshall Bagdon (Kakabeka Falls), then were edged by Jeff Zechner (Nipigon) later in the day.
That put Jackson in a must-win situation for the rest of the way in the 16-team event.
Jackson stayed alive with a convincing 9-1 win over Wayne Hampson (Red Lake) on Friday, then followed that with a narrow 6-5 win over Ken Anderson (Red Lake).
Against Al Hackner on Saturday, Jackson was leading 8-7 heading into the 10th end but the former two-time world champion scored a three-ender to win 10-8 and eliminate the Fort Frances rink.
The three rinks that qualified for the provincials in Haileybury next month were Bryan Burgess (Fort William Curling CLub), John Salo (Port Arthur Curling Club), and Brent Taylor (Kenora).
