Kathie Jackson and her rinkmates have to rely on the kindness of others if they are going to extend their stay in Thunder Bay.
The Fort Frances skip and her Northern Ontario team of third Teresa McFayden, second Lisa Penner, and lead Kris Sinclair lost their second-straight game with a 6-3 defeat to the Northwest Territories yesterday at The Dominion Club Curling Championships.
Northern Ontario fell into a tie for fifth with the Territories at 1-3 in the “Grey” pool.
With only the top two teams in each pool advancing to the playoffs, Jackson will need to win their last two games today—and hope all the teams ahead of them lose at least once each, if not twice.
That possibly could force one or multiple tie-breakers between any teams that finish at 3-3.
Jackson was in good shape yesterday against Monique Gagnier’s rink from Hay River, scoring three in the fourth to erase a 2-0 deficit and lead by one.
But Gagnier fought back with a pair in the fifth, then stole singles in the sixth and seventh before running Jackson out of rocks in the eighth.
Jackson had fallen 5-2 to Lauren Jenkyns (Alberta) in Tuesday’s late draw after entering the eighth and final end trailing only by one before giving up a steal of two.
Northern Ontario faced Nicole Baldwin of the Yukon (3-1) this afternoon, then meets Amy Gibson of British Columbia (2-2) tonight in what could be a loser-goes-home battle.
Saskatchewan (5-0) and Ontario (4-0) look to be home free to make the playoffs as they have a healthy lead atop the “Blue” pool.
They are followed by Nova Scotia (2-2), Quebec (2-2), Newfoundland and Labrador (1-3), P.E.I. (1-3), and Nunavut (0-5).
