Jackson advances to ‘Northwesterns’

The Kathie Jackson rink (Fort Frances) dumped Valerie Stuff (Atikokan) 10-2 in eight ends Sunday in Rainy River to capture the Zone Seven ladies’ crown.
Jackson, whose rink includes Kim Beaudry (third), Kelly Tolen (second), Anna Lindholm (lead), and Roz Broman (fifth), now advances to the Northwestern playdowns Jan. 7-10 in Keewatin.
The top two teams of the eight competing there will move on to the provincials Jan. 26-Feb. 1 in Kenora.
Leading 6-2 heading into the eighth end of Sunday’s final, Jackson made a split for four–prompting Stuff to take off the gloves and shake hands.
The win was a bit of revenge for Jackson, who lost to Stuff by a 12-7 count during round-robin action earlier.
Jackson earned the bye to the final after winning the draw to the button tie-breaker Saturday against Stuff and Sandy Shrumm (Stratton). Stuff then beat Shrumm in an extra end in the semi-final (no score was available).
All three teams had finished the four-team round-robin tied for first with 2-1 records. Host Rainy River was last at 0-3.
“We played well all weekend, maybe except for the game we lost against Atikokan,” said Jackson, who opened play by beating Stratton 9-6 and Rainy River 9-5.
This will be Jackson’s fifth trip to the “Northwesterns,” the last coming two years ago. She also has reached the provincial level twice–finishing seventh in 1989 in Nipigon and fourth in 1990 in Brantford.
While Jackson and Beaudry have curled together “off and on” for the last 10 years, the rink underwent a facelift this season with the additions of Tolen and Lindholm.
Jackson had defeated Janey Sisco and Broman to capture the Fort Frances ladies’ club championship and advance to the zone playdowns.
