Borderland Thunder backup goalie Tom Iwaniec only needed one strong game to capture Superior International Junior Hockey League player-of-the-week honours.
In his lone appearance of the week, Iwaniec made 37 saves in blanking
the Thunder Bay Snowplowing Wolves 5-0 in a game played Jan. 6 in Atikokan.
His league-leading third shutout upped Iwaniec’s record to 6-3-3.
The 17-year-old Nestor Falls native also lowered his goals against average to 2.88, which puts him in second in the SIJHL among goalies who have played a minimum of 300 minutes.
He trails only Thunder teammate Rob Hrabec, who sports a league-best 2.38 GAA.
Feathermen Hawks centre Charly Washipabano won offensive player honours after netting five points in a 9-2 win over the Northwest Wisconsin Knights last week.
The Thunder hit the road this weekend for a pair of games against the Knights.
