Robert Moore School hosted the first in-town intermediate (grade seven/eight) track and field meet in more than 10 years last week.
Close to 150 students from Robert Moore, St. Francis, and Mine Centre participated in the 48-event meet May 29. J.W. Walker and Atikokan also were invited but those schools could not attend.
“We just decided it was time to have one,” said head organizer Bill Daley, who also is a teacher at Robert Moore. “And the kids gave a positive response so it was a success.”
While the west end of the district regularly has held intermediate meets, Daley said there hasn’t been the same interest among that age group here in town.
“The kids are so busy doing other stuff. There’s so much going on in the spring,” he reasoned.
Daley didn’t give one specific reason why track-and-field deserved another look, saying it was just another event to give students something to work and look forward to.
“Any inter-school event is important. It builds school spirit. It gives those students a chance to compete in areas they are strong in,” he noted.
There was little time to get the event organized. Another downside was having only 12 students from both grades competing in the 1500m run.
“Even now, it’s harder to get them involved in any of the running events over 200 metres,” noted Daley, who added the short amount of preparations led them to stay away from long track events.
To avoid any last-minute fallouts next year, Daley is hoping to implement the program into the Rainy River District School Board’s agenda in September.
He said this will give a chance for the other schools to get better.
