Old teams with new faces, along with some new kids on the block, marked the opening night of play for the Borderland Indoor Women’s Soccer League last night at Fort High.
The U15 Borderland Lightning, made up of the female contingent of the same-named club team put together last summer, made a good effort in their league debut despite falling 6-2 to the Boston Pizza Ball Blasters.
Maggie Jean and Sydney Radigan each scored three times for the Ball Blasters (1-0), who have first place all to themselves.
Cassidy Roach and Alina Eldridge replied for the Lightning (0-1).
In the nightcap, the defending champion Main Street Mayhem and its reworked lineup rallied from a two-goal halftime deficit to earn a 2-2 draw with the similarly revamped Wright Physiotherapy Rockettes.
With the rosters randomly selected, save for certain exceptions (like keeping family members on the same squad), both squads had a bevy of fresh faces.
Tara MacEachern and Sara Roach paced the Rockettes (0-0-1) to a 2-0 lead by the end of the first half.
But the Mayhem (0-0-1) came alive in the second, with Shannon King and Katie Stearns netting the goals.
The Lightning will face the Rockettes next Wednesday at 7 p.m., followed by the Ball Blasters battling the Mayhem at 8 p.m.
