Cross-country skiers of all ages and skill levels are encouraged to come out to the Rainy Lake Nordic Ski Club’s first-annual “Rocky Cup” tomorrow (Feb. 2) at the Rocky Inlet trails.
Organizer Megan Ross said this morning that skiers don’t have to register in advance, but can do so tomorrow between 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the club’s chalet.
The race will begin at 11 a.m.
Young skiers can register to race on 1.5-km or 4.1-km loops while older ones can try either the 4.1-km or 8.2-km courses.
The entry fee is $10 for “Jackrabbit” and youths (17 years and under) and $15 for adults (18 years and older). This includes a free lunch.
There also will be a variety of prizes.
The ski club is hoping for as many people as possible. Ross said she’s not sure how many participants the inaugural race will attract, but added she’s aware of at least some skiers—including a few from International Falls and Atikokan—who will be competing for sure.
Ross stressed skiers of all skill levels are welcome, and people should not be intimidated by the idea of a “race.”
“It’s really a chance to come out and maybe meet other skiers. It’s good for the kids to come out and exercise,” she remarked. “It’s pretty much a family event.”
The Rainy Lake Nordic Ski Club’s chalet and trails are located off Rocky Inlet Road. To get there, drive east of town until you get to George Armstrong Drive.
Turn onto George Armstrong Drive and drive for about half-a-kilometre until you get to Rocky Inlet Road. Then take a left and follow the road for another .8 km.
You’ll know you’re at the right place when you see the chalet and parking area on the left-hand side.
