Inaugural cycling time trial a success

Thanks, in large part, to the gorgeous fall weather conditions here Sunday afternoon, the first-ever Borderland Time Trial bike event went off without a hitch, with 11 riders taking to the 25-km course.
“I was hoping for a few more people but with it being the first time for this event, it was not a bad turnout,” event organizer Jeff Tilbury said.
Tilbury himself ended up setting the quickest time for the entire event in the triathlon bike category, completing the course from the McIrvine Road boat launch and back via Highway 602, Highway 611, and Stewart Road in a time of 42:10.
Three riders competed in the road bike category, where the fastest time went to Todd Hamilton (48:50).
Wendy Tilbury (54:49) and Bob Green (56:59) rounded out the field.
The bulk of the competitors on Sunday raced against the clock in the mountain bike category, with Tom Rawn setting the pace with a run of 51:22.
Reece Jones (57:37) and Ray Gladu (1:02:48) made up the rest of the top three.
Completing the field were Rondi Roth (1:03:22), Bob Mitchelson (1:12:25), Jeannie Bujold (1:15:14), and Solange Busch (1:15:16).
“Some of the riders were surprised with how quick their times were,” Tilbury noted.
“They were just shooting for a certain time and they ended up going under what their original goal was, so they were quite happy about that.“
“Some folks just went out to ride the 25 km, so it was nice to see so many different levels of riders out there,” Tilbury added.
“Overall, it was a positive experience of everyone, and those that took part are looking to see more of these types of events in the future.”
Looking ahead, Tilbury would like to hold some more time trials in 2012 once the snow melts, along with also staging a couple of touring-type longer distance events.
“For that, we would probably offer something for those riders who would just want to go and ride the route, along with having a category for those who maybe want to be a little more competitive out there,” Tilbury said.
“We also might try something different with the course we used this time, and look at a few different locations to ride also.
“But we’ll know more about that over time.”
