With a new ice surface, a new backdrop, and, of course, a new theme, the Border Figure Skating Club is gearing up for its annual ice show.
About 90 skaters aged of three to 18 will hit the ice at the Memorial Sports Centre this Saturday evening and again Sunday afternoon to perform the “Wizard of Oz.”
“The ice show is held annually and is just a celebration of skating,” said Treena Wallace, who is the coach and show convener along with Tanis Mann.
The skaters only have had two weeks to prepare for the show, which goes Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
So far, nerves appear to be holding steady. “It’ll probably hit [Wednesday] during dress rehearsal,” laughed Wallace.
The show is the collaboration of all the club’s different classes who combine their routines for the performance.
Performers and coaches also have had plenty of assistance to build props, make costumes, and put together a brand new backdrop to fit the new ice surface.
“We have had an excellent amount of volunteers,” enthused Wallace, who said they are looking forward to performing on the new surface.
“It’ll be great. It’s been great all year,” she noted.
Spectators can buy a weekend pass for $10, or see a single show at a cost of $7 for adults and $4 for seniors and children aged four to 12 (children three and under are free).
Meanwhile, the ice is a hectic place as the young performers prepare for the big show.
“They always look forward to it,” said Wallace.
