Press Release
A Rainy River man has been fined $1,000 for illegal deer hunting.
James Armstrong pleaded guilty and was convicted under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act for unlawfully shooting a firearm across a road.
Ministry of Natural Resources conservation officers seized Armstrong’s firearm.
It will be returned once his fine is paid.
Court heard that on Nov. 8, officers investigated a complaint about possible illegal deer hunting.
A witness told officers they saw a man park his vehicle in the middle of Weir Road in Rainy River and shoot a deer standing in a field on private property near the intersection of Sharpe and Weir Roads.
Officers contacted Armstrong later that day because his vehicle matched the description provided.
Upon investigation, officers confirmed Armstrong shot the deer. They seized the carcass later that day at a local butcher shop where he had taken it.
It is illegal to shoot from, down, or across a road while hunting.
Justice of the Peace Pat Clysdale-Cornell heard the case March 11 in Rainy River.
