Monday, March 23 was the first meeting of 2008 for the Fort Frances Horticultural Society.
Plans for the year include a bog walk and a visit to the Manitou Mounds—all part of our “Living Green” theme this year.
Irene Hill-Haver was presented with the Golden Trowel Award for her contributions to the group in 2007, when she had many winning entries and brought in new members.
The evening’s program also made sure all members knew how to recognize plants with Hosta Virus X—a new threat to our gardens—and ended with eco-friendly tips on how to combat common weeds.
We were warned of the care necessary in using borax because of the possibility of the build-up of boron, which can linger for years in the soil.
April’s meeting will focus on trees and shrubs. More details will be available later.
Meetings are held at 7 p.m. on the fourth Monday of each month at the Heritage Depot (old CN station).
